Hello to our wonderful friends, from Claire, Mia, Emma and Toby at Meadows & Wood Hearing Care. We’ve got an interesting part of history to share with you all, relating back to hearing loss.
Winston Churchill was a larger-than-life character remembered as Prime Minister in the 1940s and 1950s. However, what most do not know is that Churchill suffered with hearing loss through some of the most significant moments of the 20th Century.
Like many, Churchill did not initially act on his hearing loss. His personal Doctor, Lord Charles Moran, noted that Churchill was struggling to hear on the phone. Later, with signs of worsening hearing, Churchill consulted an ENT doctor where it was determined that a high-frequency hearing loss was present as he appeared to have difficulty understanding higher pitched sounds like ‘s’ ‘h’ and ‘f’.
Churchill’s untreated hearing loss made a significant impact on his outspoken and colourful personality, as noted by his doctor in 1955. When his hearing loss began to impact his ability to understand and respond to debates in parliament, Churchill began wearing hearing aids and relied on them for discussions and debates with colleagues.
Since the 1950s, hearing technology has drastically transformed with modern hearing aids becoming more discreet and barely visible now. They have features such as artificial intelligence that adds clarity to speech, and Bluetooth technology that streams calls and music from your smartphone directly to your hearing aids. Hearing aids can now be fully personalised to provide clarity on the sounds that are most important to you.
If you or your loved one are hesitating to get treatment for signs of hearing loss just remember how much hearing aids will improve your overall health, wellbeing, and ability to connect with others.
