Spring is on its way, and with it comes warmer days and garden visitors, perhaps even some unexpected ones. Last autumn, praying mantises were spotted in Cornwall for the first time. With breeding populations already on the Isle of Wight and Channel Islands, it’s only a matter of time before these fascinating insects reach Somerset and Bristol.

What makes the praying mantis so remarkable isn’t just its distinctive appearance, but where it hears from. Tucked in the centre of its chest sits a single ear, developed to detect the ultrasonic calls of hunting bats. When a mantis hears those high-frequency chirps whilst flying at night, it drops out of the sky to avoid becoming dinner.

Deep inside your inner ear lie thousands of microscopic hair cells topped with even tinier projections called stereocilia. When sound vibrations reach them, they bend, sending electrical signals to your brain. Unlike birds or fish, humans cannot regenerate these cells once damaged. Loud noise, age or certain medications can harm these fragile structures, leading to tinnitus or permanent hearing loss.

Whether it’s birdsong in the garden or conversations with loved ones, your hearing connects you to the world. Regular assessments and addressing concerns early make all the difference. If you’ve experience tinnitus or noticed changes in your hearing, it’s worth having a chat. Modern hearing technology offers natural sound quality and features that adapt to your environment.

This summer, you might even spot a praying mantis in your garden. If you do, take a moment to appreciate that single ear working away, and perhaps give a thought to your own remarkable hearing system. And don’t forget, we’re here to help you and your family with any concerns you have about your hearing. Pop in or give us a call on 01934 248426.

After a long cold winter, spending time with friends and family we love reminds us how much we cherish connection—conversations over dinner, quiet moments together, shared laughter with friends. But what happens when an uninvited sound keeps interrupting those precious times?

Tinnitus is one of those things you don’t really think about until it happens to you. Life hums along with its usual soundtrack—kettles boiling, birds in the garden, traffic on the A370—and then you notice something else. A ringing, buzzing, or whistling that no one else can hear. It’s like your ears have started their own little broadcast, and it won’t switch off.

For many, tinnitus comes and goes. For others, it sticks around like an uninvited guest. While it isn’t dangerous, it can be incredibly frustrating, affecting sleep, concentration, and mood. The tricky part? Tinnitus isn’t a condition itself—it’s a symptom, often linked to hearing loss, noise exposure, stress, or even earwax build-up.

What gets overlooked is the emotional side. When you first notice it, panic sets in: “Will this be forever?” Those reactions are completely normal. The good news is that most people find it becomes far less intrusive over time. Your brain is brilliant at tuning out sounds once it realises they’re not a threat.

Here’s Where We Come In – at our clinics in Worle, Shirehampton, Weston-super-Mare, Clevedon and Portishead, we offer specialist tinnitus assessments and practical counselling. We check your hearing
thoroughly, explore the causes, and work with you on strategies that genuinely help—from sound therapy to lifestyle adjustments around sleep and stress. Even small changes can make a surprising difference. With the right support, that internal noise gets quieter, calmer, and far easier to live with.

This month, show yourself—or someone you love—some kindness. Tinnitus doesn’t have
to mean your world shrinks. Give us a call on 01934 248426 for a no-obligation chat about
how we can help.

The latest hearing aids are remarkably clever. Instead of you adjusting tiny buttons or fiddling with apps, these smart devices learn to do the work for you. Walk into a busy café? They automatically focus on your companion’s voice rather than the clatter of cups. Outside on a breezy day? They reduce wind noise so you can enjoy your conversation.

Think of them as your personal sound assistant, working quietly in the background whilst you get on with life. One of the biggest frustrations people tell us about is background noise making it hard to follow conversations. Modern AI technology recognizes speech patterns, so it can focus on the voices that matter most to you.

The connectivity is wonderful too. Whether it’s phone calls, your favourite radio programme, or the television, everything connects effortlessly. With new Auracast technology, you can even tune into public broadcasts at airports, theatres, or museums directly through your hearing aids. Some models now monitor health metrics too, offering peace of mind for you and your loved ones.

Let’s Have a Chat

If you’re curious about how modern hearing care could enhance your quality of life and happiness, we’d love to hear from you. Pop in for a no-obligation chat at our Worle clinic, or give us a call on 01934 248426, our team are here to help make your 2026 your smartest year yet!

Perfect for: History buffs and woodland lovers

Right on the doorstep of our main clinic in Worle, this woodland walk is a local treasure. Weston Woods (also known as Worlebury Woods or Ashcombe Woods) covers an impressive 130 hectares and offers a network of signposted paths suitable for all abilities. Some sections have even been surfaced to make them more accessible, so everyone can enjoy the experience.

As you wander through the trees, you’ll discover you’re walking through history. Hidden among the woods are the ramparts of Worlebury Camp, an Iron Age hillfort that once stood sentinel over this landscape. It’s fascinating to think about the people who lived here thousands of years ago, and the views they would have enjoyed from these heights.

The woods are home to an abundance of wildlife, and even in winter there’s plenty to spot if you keep your eyes open. The walk can be as short or as long as you like, with several routes to choose from. Some paths connect down to the coastal path below if you fancy extending your stroll to take in some sea views.

There’s free parking available, and with Weston-super-Mare just below, you’ll have plenty of options for refreshments before or after your walk.

Perfect for: Seaside strolls and spectacular views

The Lake Grounds in Portishead offer one of those walks that feels special at any time of year. This popular parkland sits right on the Bristol Channel, with a beautiful man-made lake as its centrepiece, created in the early 20th century to provide leisure space for the growing town.

The walk itself is wonderfully flexible. You can enjoy a gentle stroll around the lake, taking in the swans and geese, or extend it to Battery Point at the northern end of the Esplanade for those spectacular panoramic sea views across the estuary. The full route to Battery Point and back is about 2.3 miles, but you can easily make it shorter or longer depending on how you’re feeling.

The area is well set up for visitors with a café, children’s play area, and even an open-air lido. The Lakeside Café is typically open daily from 10am to 4pm (weather permitting), making it a perfect spot for a warming drink to start or finish your walk. There’s also the historic Battery Point lighthouse to admire – a striking black structure that’s become something of a Portishead landmark.

The paths are well-maintained, parking is free at the Lake Grounds, and the whole area has a welcoming atmosphere that makes it ideal for a winter walk.

Perfect for: Stunning vistas and literary connections

If you’re after the very best views in North Somerset, many locals will point you towards Clevedon’s Poet’s Walk. This 2km coastal trail winds along Church Hill and Wain’s Hill, taking you through some of the most beautiful scenery in the area.

The walk gets its name from the poets Samuel Taylor Coleridge and Alfred Tennyson, who both visited Clevedon and were inspired by its beauty. As you follow in their footsteps, you’ll discover why. On a clear day, you can see Clevedon Pier stretching out into the Bristol Channel, with Wales visible across the water. The views are simply breathtaking.

Along the route, you’ll pass St. Andrews Church (which you might recognise from the TV series Broadchurch) and discover the site of an ancient Iron Age fort. There’s even a sculpture featuring lines from Tennyson’s poem ‘In Memoriam’, written for his friend Arthur Hallam who is buried at St. Andrews.

The good news is that this walk is pushchair-friendly, so it’s accessible for those with young children or anyone who needs easier terrain. There are several benches along the way where you can pause and simply drink in those magnificent views.

Start at the Salthouse pub on Salthouse Road, where you can also stop for refreshments. The path is a mixture of paving and woodland trail, with some gentle inclines but nothing too challenging. It’s the kind of walk that lifts the spirits and clears the head – perfect for a winter’s day.

Perfect for: Peaceful riverside rambling and nature watching

Just north of Bristol in Shirehampton, the Lamplighters Walk offers a beautiful accessible route along the River Avon and towards the Severn estuary. This is nature on your doorstep – a chance to escape into green space without travelling far.

The walk takes you through a nature reserve, with the river on one side and fields and woodland on the other. The Avon riverside here consists of a series of grassy recreation grounds linked by a pleasant riverside path, so you can make your walk as long or short as suits you. There are lovely views across the river, and even in winter you might spot herons, kingfishers, or the winter visiting birds that make this area their temporary home.

One of the great things about this walk is how accessible it is. The paths are well-maintained, mostly flat, and there’s a pub and children’s play area along the route if you need them. It’s the kind of walk where you can simply let your mind wander, enjoy the sound of the water, and feel the stresses of the season melt away.

Starting from Shirehampton railway station or the Lamplighters Inn, the walk is easy to find and even easier to enjoy. Whether you’re craving company or solitude, the riverside path provides both the space and the scenery to make your winter walk memorable.

Sometimes a walk by the sea is exactly what you need, and Uphill, just south of Weston-super-Mare, delivers beautifully. This walk combines the best of several worlds: a marina, a nature reserve, riverside paths, and a gorgeous rugged beach.

Starting from the car park on Uphill Way, the route takes you past the marina and small pond before following the River Axe. The walk is relatively short and has minimal hills, making it ideal for a relaxed winter stroll. The river views are particularly lovely, and if you’re walking at low tide, you might venture onto the beach itself.

If you want to extend your walk, the Uphill Nature Reserve offers plenty to explore. The area is rich with wildlife, and the views from Uphill Beacon are spectacular, taking in the Somerset Levels and the coast. You’ll also find the historic Uphill Church perched on the hillside – a beautiful medieval building that’s been watching over this landscape for centuries.

The combination of beach, river, and nature reserve means you can tailor this walk to your mood. Fancy a bracing walk along the sand? Head for the beach. Prefer a gentler riverside stroll? Stick to the path by the Axe. Want to add in some history and views? Climb up to the church and beacon.

It’s this versatility that makes Uphill such a wonderful choice, whether you’re walking solo, with a companion, or with a whole crew in tow.

Recently, as the Autumn leaves fell, we had a frantic call from a client who had lost his hearing aid on an afternoon walk. He’d covered a couple of miles before realising one of his tiny aids — no bigger than a fingernail — was missing somewhere on Clifton Downs in Briston!

After checking his clothes and hat with no luck, he remembered that we’d discussed a feature in the companion app called “Find My Hearing Aid.” I was away from my desk at the time, so one of our assistant tech experts called him during his walk to guide him through the process. Using his phone, he retraced his route, watching the Bluetooth signal strength between his aids and phone grow stronger as he approached the lost device — a high-tech version of the classic “hotter/colder” game!

Depending on the model, some hearing aids can even flash an LED light or emit a high-pitched tone to help locate them. Thankfully, this client was able to recover his lost aid.

Support for features like this — along with many others — is often only available when you choose the very best in hearing technology through dedicated hearing specialists like us, your local independent audiologists in Bristol, Worle, Shirehampton, Portishead and Clevedon.

We always strive to go the extra mile. Are you curious about the latest hearing technology? Concerned about your own hearing or that of a loved one? We’re here for you at North Somerset’s only full-time, fully independent audiology and tinnitus treatment clinic, with locations across the region.

Call us on 01934 248426 for your next hearing appointment. We look forward to seeing you.

As we age, we may notice changes in our hearing. The most common cause is presbycusis—age-related hearing loss—which affects most people over 69, though signs may appear earlier. It develops gradually as delicate nerve cells in the inner ear weaken, making some sounds harder to detect.

There are two main types:

Sensory presbycusis – damage to the tiny hair cells in the cochlea

Neural presbycusis – loss of nerve cells that carry signals to the brain

Early signs include difficulty hearing high-pitched sounds like birdsong or children’s voices, turning up the TV or phone, struggling with conversations in noisy places, listening fatigue, or tinnitus (ringing in the ears). Some also notice dizziness or a feeling of fullness.

Although ageing is the main cause, other factors can speed it up—such as family history, certain medications, prolonged noise exposure, smoking, or heavy alcohol use. Hearing loss can’t be reversed, but you can slow the progression by protecting your ears, reviewing medication with your GP, and maintaining overall health.

Why act early? Untreated hearing loss can affect much more than hearing. It may strain relationships, cause social withdrawal, increase the risk of depression, and is linked to cognitive decline, including dementia.

The good news: today’s modern hearing aids are discreet, comfortable, and personalised to your needs—helping you stay connected and confident.

If you’re over 50, include a hearing check in your routine health care. Even if your hearing seems fine, a baseline test makes it easier to track changes over time.

Your hearing is precious—protect it to keep enjoying conversations, music, and laughter for years to come. If you are concerned about your hearing, book an appointment today at one of our local clinics in Worle, Shirehampton, Portishead, Weston-super-Mare or Clevedon, Bristol. We’re here to help.

Go independent!

We often hear patients say, “I wish I’d come to you first”. Many arrive after being fitted with unsuitable hearing aids, confused by inconsistent advice, struggling with poor aftercare or disappointed by rushed appointments that offer one-size-fits-all solutions. That’s why we were so encouraged by the latest Which? hearing care survey of 1,500 hearing aid users. Independent hearing clinics consistently outperformed all major high-street chains. Patients rated independents highest for:

Quality and thoroughness of hearing assessments

Choice of hearing options, brands and models

High-quality healthcare needs to be delivered by dedicated experts providing hearing care as a primary service. Unlike retail chains – often criticised for limited choice, patchy aftercare, and lack of continuity – independent clinics put patients before profit. At Meadows & Wood, we’re not bound by sales targets or national buying agreements. Instead, we focus on careful listening, accurate diagnostic tests, and matching the right technology to each patient. Continuity of care also matters. Patients value seeing the same clinician who knows their hearing history and can notice subtle changes – increasingly rare in larger chains. And aftercare is essential. Hearing aids aren’t a quick fix; they need ongoing service and patient support. Independent practices like ours offer faster follow-ups and personalised expert care. So, whether you’re exploring better hearing for the first time or have been let down elsewhere, we encourage you to explore the independent route. At Meadows & Wood, we’re here whenever you’re ready to hear more clearly again.

Selective hearing

It’s a familiar joke. A partner or family member zones out during a conversation and we laugh about them having “selective hearing.” But when it happens, it might not be a laughing matter. It could be one of the signs of hearing loss.

Many people struggle to hear clearly in environments with background noise, like cafés, restaurants or family gatherings. You might miss the start of a sentence but only catch the punchline, or find yourself asking people to repeat themselves more often than you’d like.

This is one of the first signs of high-frequency hearing loss which affects your ability to hear sounds like ‘s’, ‘t’ and ‘f’. In busy settings, the brain has to work overtime to fill in the gaps, leading to listening fatigue and memory issues.

The good news? There’s plenty you can do.

At Meadows & Wood Hearing Clinic, we often see people who didn’t realise how much they were missing until they tried our hearing systems. With today’s advanced digital and wireless technology, it’s possible to reduce background noise, boost clarity, and make conversations, the TV and Radio sound and feel natural again.

So, if someone’s been teasing you about “selective hearing,” it might be time for a hearing assessment, not a hearing joke. Our hearing assessment is the most comprehensive available, measuring not only ability to hear tones, but also speech and eardrum health.

Is there anything else you’d like to know about hearing health? We are here for you, in North Somerset’s only full time and fully independent audiology and tinnitus treatment clinic, in Worle, Portishead, Clevedon and Ellenborourgh Park North. Get in touch with our friendly team using the contact details below.

Hearing aids have come a long way from the bulky, whistling devices many of us remember. Today’s models are discreet, high-tech, and designed to enhance every aspect of your life, not just your hearing.

The team at Meadows & Wood Hearing Care has just returned from visiting Starkey’s Global HQ in Minnesota; one of the world’s leading hearing aid manufacturers. Alongside 50 audiologists from across the UK, we saw first-hand the incredible innovation and care behind Starkey’s devices. The best part? That same technology is available right here at our clinics in North Somerset and Bristol.

At Starkey’s impressive HQ, we saw how each hearing aid is rigorously tested for durability in all environments. Each device undergoes extreme tests, from being frozen in sub-zero temperatures, baked in high heat, and drenched in saline streams within pressurised chambers, ensuring long-lasting performance and reliability no matter the environment.

We also discovered Starkey’s latest cutting-edge technology. Their Edge AI model uses artificial intelligence to boost speech clarity by up to 30%, even in noisy environments like restaurants and family gatherings. With built-in 3D motion sensors, these devices can track steps, monitor social engagement, and even help detect falls before they happen.

Their latest models also feature Auracast broadcast streaming, allowing you to connect directly to public sound systems, like cinemas and airports, thanks to next-generation Bluetooth LE Audio.

At Meadows & Wood, we’re proud to offer the latest hearing care technology as North Somerset’s only full-time, fully independent audiology and tinnitus treatment clinic. Our expert audiologists are here to support you with personalised care and state-of-the-art hearing solutions. Get in touch with our friendly team today by clicking the button below.
