Selective hearing
It’s a familiar joke. A partner or family member zones out during a conversation and we laugh about them having “selective hearing.” But when it happens, it might not be a laughing matter. It could be one of the signs of hearing loss.
Many people struggle to hear clearly in environments with background noise, like cafés, restaurants or family gatherings. You might miss the start of a sentence but only catch the punchline, or find yourself asking people to repeat themselves more often than you’d like.
This is one of the first signs of high-frequency hearing loss which affects your ability to hear sounds like ‘s’, ‘t’ and ‘f’. In busy settings, the brain has to work overtime to fill in the gaps, leading to listening fatigue and memory issues.
The good news? There’s plenty you can do.
At Meadows & Wood Hearing Clinic, we often see people who didn’t realise how much they were missing until they tried our hearing systems. With today’s advanced digital and wireless technology, it’s possible to reduce background noise, boost clarity, and make conversations, the TV and Radio sound and feel natural again.
So, if someone’s been teasing you about “selective hearing,” it might be time for a hearing assessment, not a hearing joke. Our hearing assessment is the most comprehensive available, measuring not only ability to hear tones, but also speech and eardrum health.
